Psalm 88 [87 LXX]
Sep 24, 2017

The text above is a crude translation of the LXX text. In this case, the main structure in not a strict chiastic form. Instead, a threefold parallel structure is evident. The psalmist begins and ends the psalm explaining his troubles to the LORD. Note that the middle section contrasts positively with (and highlights) the psalmist’s hope for God’s mercy to deliver him from all his troubles. So we can then discern an ABA structure (negative, positive, negative). This might be interpreted as aspects of God’s covenant: cursing / (appeal for blessing) / cursing. The covenant cursing / blessing in my outline is admittedly implicit. It is justifiable, in my opinion, since the concept is so pervasive as to never be far from the OT author’s thought.
